hi.
I must apologise now, because I am a real newbie. Instillation of Red Hat 7.0 was fine, but now that I have it, I can't seem to install any software.

Netscape: I decided to download 6.1 off the net, un-tarred the file, executed the netscape download program, and chose the dir '/usr/local/netscape' (the default path)
however when downloading, the program said it was saving it to '/home/joe/netscape-installer/xpi'

When the download finishes files are in that dir (all .xpi extension)
but when I change to that directory in the terminal to run netscape 6.1 ('./netscape') it says it cannot find any file called that.
And my planned path ('usr/local/netscape') has nothing in it???
what is going on??? where are the files??? how do I launch the program???

Please, if anyone can help, or give me sum advice on how to generally install software, as well as thuis specific problem, I would be very grateful!!!!
all comments welcome!

Hi,

Get hold of the installer first..

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.1/unix/linux22/netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz

Then save that in a directory like /usr/download/netscape.

cd /usr/download/netscape (or whatever)

tar zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
cd netscape-installer
mv * /home/joe/netscape-installer
cd /home/joe/netscape-installer
./netscape-installer (runs the graphical installer)

(Hopefully it will recognise you already have all the xpi files in the subdirectory)

[xpi files, incidentally, are just 'zip' files with another extension - you can unzip them if you want and read the install.js install file contained inside. ]

thanx very much for ur help, but my main problem is not loading the netscape download program, but that once the download program has finished there is no data in the file I chose to save the download in.
but there are these .xpi files in my presonal file, where the initial .tar.gz file was downloaded to...???
please help!
any and all comments welcome and appreciated!
thanx y'all

Hi,

I've played around with a bit but can't see any way to get the installer to play with pre-existing xpi files and, although you could do things like copy browser.xpi to /usr/local/netscape and do 'unzip browser.xpi', it still gives errors if you then try to run from /usr/local/netscape/bin . Unless you've got a painfully slow connex its probably better to download the full install file --> ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.1/unix/linux22/sea/netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-sea.tar.gz
