hi
i'm sure that everyone in here already knows how to do this but i'm new to setting up a web server and was hoping someone could give me a quick rundown of what needs to be done to get it working properly.
right now i'm planning on running an apache web server in linux through a cable ISP. how do i go about getting a domain name and setting it up correctly?
thanks

-Ant

Your ISP might be able to assist you in obtaining a domain name. Failing that, you would have to register with the Internet Naming Authority for your part of the world.

As far as setting up Apache goes, your first port of call should be the online documentation. Point a browser on your Linux server to <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and you should be able to see the online Apache docs.

Every Linux distribution I know installs Apache as standard, so you shouldn't have any trouble here. If it's not installed, have a browse on your distribution CD. It will be there somewhere! :)

Next thing to do is to run over to your local book store and get a copy of O'Reilly's "Apache: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition" (ISBN 1-56592-528-9).

The final thing (and probably the most important) is to consider the security of your web server. You should be looking at setting up firewalling on the server using ipchains and co.

Hope this helps.
