I have installed version 5.0 of the reader on my computer. However, if I double click on a pdf file from Windows Explorer, version 3.0 opens. I removed this when I installed version 4.0. I do not understand how version 3 keeps coming up when it should be version 5. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you can't seem to find where to remove Acro3, try reassigning the file associations in Windows to open PDFs into Acro5.

Do you know how to set file assocations? Go to Windows Explorer. Single left click on any PDF file to highlight it (but NOT open it). Then RIGHT click while holding down the SHIFT key. One of the menu items that should appear is 'Open With'. Click on that, and you will get a list of programs on your computer. Scroll down until you find Acrobat Reader 5 and select it. Before clicking OK, make sure you check the box that says (something like) 'Always use this application to open this type of file'.

From now on, all PDFs should open up in Acrobat Reader 5.

Thanks Eggles. Jimoblak, I think you were saying the same thing but I did not know how to reassign the file associations until Eggles explained how to do it. Anyway, do either one of you know how I can rid my system of Acro3? I have gone to add/remove programs in the control panel and it is not listed. Also, there is nothing (that I know of) in my Adobe file folder. Thanks for the help

I believe that Acrobat 3 may be installed in a folder called AcroExch or simply Acrobat in the C:\ drive root. Adobe began using the C:\Program Files\ folder as the default installation folder for Acrobat 4. Previous versions were installed by default to the C:\ drive root.

You may also be opening Acrobat 3 from a network installation.

You could recklessly delete ALL Acrobat programs from your computer (do a file search for 'acro' and ending in '.exe') and then immediately reinstall your current version of Acrobat. This should restore the current, valid version and make the Windows registry happy again.

Before you installed version 4.0, did you use add/remove programs to uninstall version 3.0? Ahhhhh, I see you have a machine that goes Bing!

I have the same problem. I purchased an upgrade to Acrobat 4.o and uninstalled Acrobat 3.o reader and then installed acrobat 4.0. Whenever I click on a pdf it comes up in acrobat 3 reader unless i've first opened acrobat 4.
Recklessly deleting files sounds like fun but when I do that i always get subsequent character development experience which I don't want today. Following the more conservative guideline, I searched for acr*.exe files as suggested and found another installation lurking in lotus smartsuite. When I renamed that one my ability to read pdfs disappeared so i'd guess mike has a similar situation which jimoblacks clue will help discover.
Thanks for the help.

I had trouble with changing the associations - I was trying to go through my computer-view-file types I changed the location to the same location shown in properties for the acrobat 4 icon, but my pdfs wouldn't load. I'd changed enough stuff I lost track of a path to reconstruct the original settings and i wound up deleting the pdf file association, uninstalling acro 4 and doing a complete reinstall. things work fine now.

I had a similar problem, only one that made even less sense.

When I upgraded to PageMaker 7 and install the Acrobat 5 LE that comes with it I still got Acrobat 3 every time I tried to create a PDF file from PageMaker.

I finally uninstalled everything PageMaker and Acrobat, then, reinstalled Acrobat before installing PageMaker again and now it works correctly.
