I lost my root password, my machine is running slackware, how can i log in? I have the machine and cd in front of me.

Which bootloader are you using, GRUB or LILO?

Chris

When the Grub loader starts, hit the 'a' key to bring up the command line for grub. at the end to the text that is listed, type in single and hit enter. This will boot your machine in single-user mode, with no password needed. At the command line, just enter passwd and change the password to a new one.

hi
when the MBR (master boot record) asks for the os selection. u have to come at command line, by pressing key 'a'.
linux considers that wheneven the file system is corrupted or due to any other reasons. it gives facility to enter the user into maintaince mode. where there is no need of super user password. NOTE: IT CAN BE POSSIBLE ONLY WITH REDHAT ).

after pressing 'a' it gives the command line. where u have to pass the parameter with linux.
i.e. linux single
which means boot the linux in to single user mode.

bye
