Here is my problem:
I have a large amount of text in Word which I need to paste into InDesign text boxes where I already have defined the Character Styles. I want InDesign to remember all hard spaces and all non-breaking hyphens made in Word, but I also want to get text formated according to the character styles when I paste the text into InDesign. I do not want to apply the styles after importing the text from Word. Anyone knows how to get InDesign remember ONLY special characters when PASTING from a Word doc?

For a start, I think you should be creating PARAGRAPH styles, as character styles can only be applied after highlighting the characters you want it applied to. Whereas para styles can be applied to a whole para simply by inserting the cursor anywhere in that para. And don't paste the Word text, use the File>Place method and you can specify which formatting you want to retain.

Thank you for your advice about paragraph styles.
Regarding the File>Place method: the avalable RTF import options seem not be be enough - I tried different options and it still does not work. The text being placed either keeps all Word formattings (which I do not want) or it does not "recognize" the special characters as hard space and non-breaking hyphen, which is what I need. Could you specify which options to choose? Thanks.
