how do i get a torn edge look to my poster

heya i want to add an effect that will make the edges look torn. i tried adding a new layer and deleting everything except for the part i wanted to appear torn and then multiplied that but it didnt make much of a difference. is there a more effective way to do it? or shall i just tear the edges of a page and scan it in?

I would do that - scan in a piece of torn paper and use it as a mask

You could also try Filter>Sketch>Torn Edges. Make the edges of your paper a little uneven ( paint/erase ) before applying the filter.
