I Just installed Red Hat Linux 6.1 the other day and set up Apache Web Server and WU-FTPd and AnonFTP on the system. I have no clue where to start when it comes to the FTP deamon. Does anyone know of a good deamon that is easy to use and isn't as confusing to use as WU-FTPd? I need to set up a FTP Deamon that allows for "imaginary" users (users that don't have a real user account on the server). I want to develop a way for my clients to access a section of the web server that they own and I need the users to be able to access any location on the server that I specify. I tried to figure out how to get WU-FTPd set up but I couldn't find anything on creating users or passwords or telling what paths the users have access to. I used WAR-FTPd for windows previously, and it was much easier to specify what the users have access to. This is just too stone age to understand, if you ask me. Can someone help me set this up or tell me a good, user friendly FTP Deamon to use?
Thank you,
Steve Kiehl, Webmaster, Nanovox.com

In RH 6.1, you can use linuxconf tool to start daemon. In fact, I think RH has their own console ansi graphics tool. Just type in setup any where on the console and from there there should be an option called services. If you know unix, you can always edit the text files to start it. As of ftp only account, I have never done that on unix. I am not sure if you can.

Okay. I just upgraded to Red Hat 6.2. I know how to get an FTP deamon running in the services. I need a way to set up virtual hosts and virtual users. I need to be able to give my users ftp access and only ftp access to the system. And I need it to locate them in a place other than their home directories. Is there an ftp server that can do that easily? and if there is, can anyone show me how? I'm kind of new to this linux business.
Thanks,
Steve Kiehl
Webmaster, Nanovox.com

Have you taken a look at ProFTPd? I haven't actually used the vitual Users and sites, but I think that it is supported. Check out <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> used ProFTP for a while and found it was a lot easier to setup in the first place than WU.

Hope this helps,
Paul
