Under WinXP Pro SP1, my previously fine usb flash drive suddenly lost its partition info. Have recovered important files using Ontrack Easy Recovery 6, and now wish to format the thing so that I can use it again, but neither XP nor Partition Magic 8 can do it. It still appears under XP, but PM8 can't see it. Can I go into Safe Mode Command Prompt mode and fdisk it? Command Prompt under Windows generates an error as follows: "The volume does not contain a recognised file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted" I think from this that its fairly obvious that the file system is corrupt, but as XP does not contain DOS that I won't be able to fdisk the thing. Does anyone know of a better way?

You should be able to format a flash drive like any other dive.
If XP can not format it then I think the drive is doomed.
Remember,it's flash memory not a drive like your hard disks that can work well even with a few bad blocks here or there...

have you tried to use Disk manager in xp? - obvious I know but you havent mentioned it.

right click My Computer
select Manage
select Disk Management
right click on the partition and select format
