How do I fix this error "no options for the type tool"

I can't use the type tool to write text in any kind of graphic I make. This is because I have no options for the type tool. It looks like this:

How do I fix this?

What version of PS? And if you're working with a bitmap mode you won't necessariliy have much to do with it. It doesn't automatically create a type layer if you're in bitmap mode, so you'd have to switch to grayscale. Other than that exactly what options did you need?

I have photoshop 5.5.

It just seems to turn on and off for no reason.

I opened up a jpeg and turned it into a CMYK then tried to use text tool and it would not work.

I think I fixed it. The full text tool does not seem to work with a psd file of which it was. Save image as a jpeg then open up that jpeg image and type the text there.
