How do I find FTP version

I take it your after the info displayed in the login stanza
220 ***** FTP server (Version 4.1 Tue Jul 6 21:20:07 CDT 2004)
Spent an hour looking at this yesterday and other than scripting a login and grabbing the banner I can't see anyway of doing it. I thought the ftpd.msg file may contain the data but it appears not. I'll have another look and see what I can dig up.

Unix *is* user friendly. It's just selective about who its friends are.
