Erase Media in a Drive

You can choose to erase media using either Quick erase or Long erase. Not all devices support a long erase; those that do not will always perform a quick erase.

Quick erase writes an indicator at the beginning of the media that makes the data contained on the media inaccessible. For most uses, a Quick erase is sufficient.

Long erase instructs the drive to physically erase the entire media. If you have sensitive information on the media and you want to dispose of it, use Long erase. Running Long erase on media should take several minutes to several hours to complete (depending on the drive and the media capacity).

Quick and Long erase do not change the cartridge label. To change a cartridge label, use Label Media or Rename prior to the Erase operation.

You can monitor the Erase operation from the Job Monitor tab.

You cannot abort an Erase opertion after it has started; however, you can use Abort to stop a pending erase operation. To abort a pending operation, click the Job Monitor tab, right-click the job you want to abort, and then click Abort on the shortcut menu.

To erase media in a drive:

1. From the Devices tab, do one of the following:

· Right-click the drive to display the shortcut menu, and then click Erase.

· Select a drive, and then on the Tools menu, point to Device Operations, and then click Erase.

2. Click Quick or Long.

The following warning is displayed:

Warning: This operation will be performed on the current media in the drive or slot. If the media has been changed since the last inventory operation was performed, the cartridge label in the next dialog may not match the media in the drive or slot selected.

3. Click OK to continue.

The Erase dialog box is displayed.

The media label that is displayed in the Erase dialog box was read during the last inventory operation. The media label displayed does not change until another inventory operation occurs. Therefore, if you change media in the slot or drive but did not run Inventory, the media label displayed may not match the actual media in the slot or drive.

4. Click one of the following:

Yes Click this to erase the data on the media specified in the dialog box.
No If you selected multiple media to erase, click this if you do not want to erase the media specified in the dialog box.
Yes to All If you selected multiple media to erase, click this to erase data on all the selected media without further prompting.
Cancel Click this to stop the erase operation.
