I have been made responsible for my church's website. First of all I hardly know anything about web developement. I am an Access/SQL Server guy.

Anyway, I am using Front Page. One of the pages that I need to get at was develope with FLASH. When I try to edit it with Front Page or Dreamweaver, I don't see anything that resembles the actual page.

Will I need to purchase FLASH or is there a more resonable way to get at the code?

Much thanks in advance,,,,

If the page was created using Macromedia Flash, then I think you will need the original .fla file in order to edit it.

As I understand it, a Flash-based website requires Macromedia technology to maintain. Furthermore, I think you actually need the "source" files (think trying to maintain software when you only have the .exe files).

Presumably, the organization has a copy of Flash, else they wouldn't have a Flash site. Then again, you might have had the site built by someone with their own personal copy of Flash.

Having a new website foisted onto you can be a really exciting opportunity to learn new techniques, HTML, a little scripting, etc. So, you can maybe look at it that way. By using non-proprietary technology, not only do you shatter the shackles of Flash, but you contribute a website that adheres to design standards that encompass many more people.

Specifically here, building a site using good HTML and such will benefit you because search engines can't look inside Flash sites. This means that people who go to Google and are looking for exactly those answers your organization uniquely provides, are totally hosed. And we're not talking merely inconvenienced here, we're talking fiery descent, the lake of fire, etc. [flame] So, it behooves your mission to make your pages as accessible as possible.

I am 99% certain that whatever your Flash site is doing, you can build a more accessible site using non-proprietary tools.

Cheers,
