Hi,

Hoping someone can help this novice. How are CGI scripts edited? From Frontpage if I double click on the file I am prompted for an editor. I chose Microsoft Word. Now after having this .cgi file opened in word I'm afraid I may have messed up the script file. It looks like HTML code was added to the script. What steps do I take to edit .cgi files? Can this be done from within Frontpage?

TIA,
Zoey

Use a plain text editor, not any bloated MS editors like Word or Frontpage which assume they know what they are doing but instead screw everything up. Under Windows, you can use Notepad, or download Textpad (do a Google search) for line numbers and syntax highlighting. Personally, I suggest you use one of these two editors for ALL of your web programming, including HTML, Javascript, etc. Under linux, you of course have far more options... I like to use nedit or kwrite or jed or pico.

zoey-

another option that you'll find usefull is ultraedit. it is another text editor that has syntax highliting and line numbers and such but it will also read and write in mac and unix format. Now you say "Who cares?" You might. If you are uploading to a unix server from a windows pc then you will care. The unix machine will see your code completly different than a pc would...thus ultraedit's ability to save in unix format is very handy!

the url should be but if not just google for it! Robert Carpenter

Robert,

Thanks very much. I will download this. This is exactly what I am doing (uploading via FTP from a WindowsXP pc to a Unix server) so it sounds like this would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Zoey
