have tried now for over a week to carry out 'offline' restore of the priv (pub) EDB so we can do a disaster recovery for a client.

Have spent many hours on phone to very pleasant but unhelpful CA support staff.

If a do a restore by session, tell it to restore to D:\, get the error message can not create d:\d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata

Please help

TIA

Jez

Do you need to recreate the mdbdata folder?

Why don't you restore priv.edb to a temp directory, stop the exchange services, copy priv.edb to \exchsrvr\mdbdata directory, run isinteg -patch and restart exchange services.

If you want to restore directly to mdbdata folder and it already exists, stop the exchange services first and in options, destination tab, set to do not create base directories.

Tried recreating directory and restoring to alternate location, both always the same error message

also tried all 3 different destination tab options!

Have you tried restoring to original location? (stop exchange services first)

Are you trying to restore the mdbdata directory (as your error message suggests) or just priv.edb?

Any other error messages?

no - as we are unsure of the original O & OU names (was not us who built server)

I am after just PRIV & PUB then I can do offline recovery, but can not find a way to restore these other than selecting session which does not work anyway.

No just this message about can not create this path.

Sorry this may be obvious but.... Have you tried these steps?

With the tape that you want to restore from in the drive, select merge option. Check in the right-hand pane the ID of the tape (4 chars).

Close merge.

Go into restore. Select by session.

Expand session that ties up with your tape ID.

Expand session that backed d: drive (if thats where mdbdata folder used to be).

Expand down to exchsrvr directory, mdmdata directory.

Select priv.edb and pub.edb only (in as6.61 they will be part of the tree, in as2000 they will appear in the right hand pane)

Select option not to create base directories.

Select restore to D:
priv.edb and pub.edb should be restored to D:\

done the merge part already

restore by session show information store as session 4 (the one thats got priv & pub in it)

and you can not expand this any further

Is your database engine running OK?

When you merged the tape, did you select to merge all sessions? (Tick the all sessions box)

If you mean your session 4 is the information store backup (ie as backed up using the exchange backup agent), this is for restoring data directly into a new information store, not for restoring priv.edb and pub.edb as files.

If you want to restore priv.edb and pub.edb as files, expand the session which backed up the drive they were on and locate the files and restore those as above. You can then run isinteg -patch as normal.

If you cannot expand sessions into actual files and directories, either they weren't backed up, you have not merged correctly, the backup was set up badly, or there is an issue with your database engine.

priv & pub were not backed up via standard backup only by backup agent and we are unaware of the O & OU of orginal system.

Are you sure your .edb files aren't corrupted? try restoring to new server and see if you're about to even access the edb files.

we are using new server as we had to get customer back up and running ASAP
