I'm having lots of problems with svchost.exe. Our network consists of about 50 computers and about 15 or 20 of them (some of them 2+) have had svchost.exe problems. These only occur after they recieve updates from our server. I need to fix wsus, but first I need to disable it so I don't have to go around and fix everybody's computer all the time.

any help would be appreciated

You will need to disable the GPO you used to set the WSUS server. You will then need to modify the registry of those workstations. That would be easiest with vbscript in my opinion.

I hope you find this post helpful.

High CPU usage older clients isn't uncommon after updates, if you observe the process with Process Explorer after install you will see it clearing up .mst and .msi files. This task seems to take a while especially on older clients and after large office patches.
AV software also seems to cause issues sometimes i've seen an install repeatedly fail but when i turned down the scan sensitivity it worked straight away (these clients only had 128Mb RAM tho).

Also you can use Dial a Fix (this is a util that runs a series of MS fixes) to clear the Software Distribution folder, this can also be done manually by stopping the service and emptying the folder.

Not so much a problem with high processor usage (although it has happened on a few) but rather it gives this error in the event log:

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0x00012780.

and then when the dialog with the error is closed, the machine became unusable (no new executables would start). If left open machine works ok, but hangs on shutdown.

No, haven't used it yet. Are you suggesting to run it on the server or the clients?

Yesterday on the server I stopped the wuauserv service and then renamed the Software Distribution folder. then restarted the service

This is what I have been doing for the clients, but I had not done it for the server yet.

I think that should only affect the update client on the server. Dial a Fix is usually used on client PC's.
