There's a new feature in WOrd 2002/2003, styles, this drow down list to the left with two crossing A-s where you can select text formatting from a defined set. I need a document that has headers and text, so I deleted all the styles and created two new.
However when I paste text into the document or insert text file or anything, word pastes it as it was in the source, and creates two zillion new styles to match it. When I reformat it with my stlyes half the style disappear from the list and half stay.

How do I totally (or as much as possible) block any automatic style list changes? Whatever gets pasted, insterted etc in the document gets one of the defined styles.

When you paste, I would suggest using "Edit", "Paste Special" and select "text only". This way no formatting gets carried over from the document you copied it from.
