I reinstalled my windows 95 using diskettes. The windows 95 version is 4.00.950B. The installation went fine. However, when I try to set up the modem, there is a problem. The OS tries to detect the modem but it seems to only try and pick up a modem that is connected to COM2. I am assuming that the OS thinks the modem is supposed to be external.
However, my modem is internal. It is connected to a PCI slot. I would really appreciate some help. The company that made the modem is a viking.

Not quite sure what the situation is, but whether your modem is internal or external, it will still use the address range of a standard COM port. Windows _will_ recognize a PCI modem as a COM port installed in the slot. I suggest disabling COM2 from the motherboard and just try and install the drivers that came with the card.

Sometimes you need to install a loader first from a CD. Sometimes you tell it at the first screen that you have a disk and point at the CD. Sometimes you have to tell it to browse and find the right spot on the CD. Sometimes you insert the CD and it finds stuff automatically.
There is no one way, and I'm sure I've not found them all. Ed Fair

Some modems are jumpered or default to COM2.

On some motherboards, it may not possible to disable COM1 which makes it only available to accept an external device. With COM1 enabled, an internal device generally has to take or settle for COM2 or COM4.

As dakota81 mentioned a PCI modem will be recognized as a Com port. It will use Com 2 as you probably have an external Com 1 port. Have you checked in Device Manager for Question marks or Xs by the modem. If the modem shows up there OK, then access Modems in Control Panel, Click on Diagnostics, select the modem on COM 2 and click More Info. If this works with no errors, than try to connect to whatever service you are using the modem for. You could also use Phone Dialer and just dial a number and see if the destination phone rings.
