When I go to the history button, click it, then click on the search icon, type the letter 'A' and then 'search now' i will still see a list of all the pages that i've ever been to. Even after deleting the history, clearing the cookies, etc - how do I get rid of this list?

Did you try start-settings-control panel-internet options-clear history? Or go into
c:\windows\history
hit Ctrl+A(highlight them all select Delete hold in Shift-click delete confirm yes.
Holding in shift makes every deletion skip the garbage bin.
When you delete all the files in the cookies folder do you ever wonder why you cant delete the index.dat or whats in that file? You would be surprised.

Right click on Interner Explorer icon on your desktop and hit delete history, and then click on Delete FIles, and check the box for 'delete all offline content'. This should
do the trick.
Also delete the value/data for the URL1 -> URLxx in this
location in regedit.
To do this go to start, run, type in regedit.
then navagite your way to this filed....
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLsin here you will see a list of URL's, delete these!!!!!!!!!! Jay~

One button does them all:

For Internet explorer, right-click on the taskbar, choose properties, click the Start Menu Programs tab and click the Clear button.

This deletes the following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU

To clear history and temporary internet files, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, choose properties and click the Delete Files and Clear History buttons.

To clear the autocomplete history, click the Content tab, click the AutoComplete button and click the Clear Forms and Clear passwords buttons.
