How do I defrag/compact my databases

Sorry if this sounds like a numpty question but i need to somehow compact/ defrag the databases in Exchange 5.5.

Database is getting rather large and i'm guessing there's a lot of redundant space in there from old deleted users etc. How do i do this.

Can it be done online or will I have to put the DB's offline?
