How do I create a running variance record forumla ?

First off I enjoy the forumn...you guys are a great resource ! THANK YOU !

I have an order price field, with detail records like this
that will be subtotaled at the end an order numbers grouping.

I need to take the previous order price record and subtract/add it from the one above it depending on if the
price increases/decreases.

2002 orders - year can be found in order date field descending and will also be a select parameter in the report.

Here is an example:
order# order price difference/variance order date
1 18 +8 .....
2 10 +2
3 8 -1
4 9 -11
5 20 +15
total 2002: +13
(2001 order date last one needed for balance but will not be shown on printed report, can be any 2001 date.)
6 5 12/31/2001

I'm a beginner with CR 8.5. and not a clue I'd appreciate any help on creating a forumula to accomplish this. Thanks for your help !

Well I understand the running total concept will give me the +13 as in my example but how do I ge the variances on the detail line to work and the previous year transaction as a starting point ?
