a tutorial i am reading asks me to, after i make my shape"
"...and copy and paste the shape (as a path) into a new Photoshop file with a white background"
how is this done?

Draw out your shape then choose the path selection tool (the dark arrow). Click on the path to select it (you will see the anchor points when it is selected). Press Ctrl + C to copy. Open your new PS file and Ctrl + V to paste. The path should be pasted, and you can access it in the Paths palette.
