I work in a window pc enviroment but each year I must submit manuals to printers who are in mac quarkexpress enviroment.

Needless, to say by the time the project is completed I am ready to screem. Can anyone help me find a set of rules or provide suggestions that will make the job easier and less hazardous.

changing to a mac at work by the way is out.

thanks

Why don't you just convert the completed project to PDF? PDF is completely cross-platform, allows you to embed most fonts so that you will not have font issues and reflow issues, and embeds all graphics. Any competent print shop would much rather have a quality PDF than a raw file that they would have to convert, especially cross-platform and from one app to another.

Talk to your print-house, they will tell you what printer PPD to use to develop the document actually that should be your first move with any project).

hope this helps... When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I would love to send PDF. Unfortunately the last printers we delt with 1 didn't want pdf because their designer created a graphic for each page to hightlight it and they said it was too difficult to work with pdfs. I guess I should have mentioned that their designer will generally design the cover and possilble a small graphic to highlight each page.

It should be no problem for a printer to add a cover or add graphics on top of PDF pages. It surely beats having to deal with reflow, font issues and the entire PC to Mac conversion of different programs. I frequently open PDFs in Illustrator, make changes and save.

Most competent print houses have both Mac and PCs in house, as well as having current versions of Quark, Pagemaker, InDesign and even Framemaker. Have you looked around for another printer that can adapt to your requirements? It seems to me that this printer does not really want your business by placing the onus on you to make the project work.

There really is no graceful way for you to make your framemaker files quark friendly other than PDF. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
