I have recently acquired a Cisco 2620 router. I am trying to learn about LAN/WAN configuration and management. I have the cable hooked up from the console port to the serial cable in my PC. I do not have any IP address information, username or password, or a manual for it. I have searched online and have done some basic config on similar routers over the phone with a security specialist. I am a novice and would appreciate any help anyone can be to get me started. I hope to be able to offer some assistance to others in this website in the future. Thanks in advance.

Dear RouterKid1:
Thank you very much for that link. Do you know what terminal emulator I use to connect to the router? This seems to be the part I am having trouble getting started with. Thanks again. You're help is greatly appreciated. I am very thankful to Tek-Tips for having this site available for us novices.

RouterKid1:

I am assuming that I should use Hyperterminal. My question would be what are the settings for a serial 1 connection as far as the actual connection properties go (Bits per second, Data bits, Parity, Stop bits, Flow control). What type of emulation should I be using. Thanks again for any help you can be.

The default parameters for the console port are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 2 stop bits

Thanks again ROUTERKID1,
Do you know how I can reset the router back to factory defaults as the username and password are also unknown to me? I think after that I should be all good. Is the only way to reset a Cisco router to remove and replace the ROM?

No definately not.

Reboot the router, and whilst its booting hold down control and press break until ROMMON1> appears. And then type

confreg 0x2142

press enter

now type reset.

the router will load up "factory defaults". Once in the router and in enable, type

write erase

press enter

And now go into config mode and type

config-register 0x2102

press enter

then type

reload

and you will have successfully wiped the router.

Thank you MartinR82,
That did the trick. I am now into the router and ready to start learning the Cisco IOS. Thanks a million to you, ROUTERKID1, and TekTips Forum for all your help. You guys are amazing.
