how do I choose which object in my XML file to display

I'm really new at XML. I can display the data in XML and XSL but I was wondering, does anybody know how I can do this....I have a mainwebpage which contains 4 buttons, Meat,Poultry,Fruit,Vegetables. Whichever I choose, a xml file will open but will display only the Fruit (if its what was chosen). I think it can be done by passing say an anchor or parameter but I don't know how.

There will be only one xml file. Thanks for any help
 
Sounds like you need manipulate an xml file using some javascript which would sit in the head element of your html file, ready to be called by an onclick event associated with each button.

Check out this tutorial which shows how to manipulate xml files with javascript:
