Please help me, the Win 98 start up screen is very boring, so therefore (I assume) there must be a way of changing it!

Could anyone tell me how please.

Thank You for any help sent.

A replacement startup screen needs to be a BMP file 320 pixels wide by 400 pixels high. Windows "stretches" this to fill the screen, so your replacement needs to be "thin" in appearance. After saving it rename it to LOGO.SYS and copy it to your root directory. I cant remember if 98 uses root; if it does not work then copy it to the Windows directory. If your bMP is not of the correct dimensions, Windows will simply ignore it.

Clive
clive@digitalsky.co.za

I assemble and sell these things.

also make sure that the bitmap (saved as an RLE format bitmap) is no larger than 64K (IN MEMORY)
Karl
kb244@kb244.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Sorry Karl, thats not strickly true you can go above 64k. I have converted "JPEG"'s to "BMP"'s then changed them to sys files. The largest has been 127k and is working quite well.
The trick is to modify it in MSPAINT after converting it to a "BMP". Just stretch it out to 800x600 or to 600x480 which ever res it is going to be used at. Re-save the convert to Logo.sys (startup screen) this one is in the root directory of "C" drive or Logow.sys (shutdown screen) or even Logos.sys (shut off screen) which are in the Windows folder by just changing the "bmp" to "sys". You must remember to change the old one to "old" before installing the new one. Just in case you need it again.

By the way Karl the lad is back and I will see him sometime in the next few days about the game. He plays both Doom and QuakeII.

hmm, I must be mistaking the old Win3.1 startup screen for the size limitations. In anycase let that kid know that I have Doom, Doom2, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Quake2, and Quake3.(they'res a few more, but not from ID Software)
