On a SQL 2000 with Windows 2000 server I accidently changed what .DAT's open with from "unknown application" to "notepad". Now all the .DAT's on the server (including all the SQL files) have the notepad icon instead of that generic Windows one. Did I mess up anything? How can I change it back?

You didn't mess anything up.
to change it back go to.

Start -> control panel -> folder options

Click on the file types tab.

Scoll down to .DAT, click on it and select change in the lower window.

I'm glad I didn't mess anything up, but DAT is not listed under the file types tab.

Add it as a registered file type.

Okay I was able to add it, but there was no choice for "registered file type" if that's what you meant. If that's not what you meant, I don't know what to pick. I went back to your first step now that it's added, and I don't see anything listed that applies to what it is to change it to. As it stands, it still shows as a notepad object.

The icon is only there to make things pretty for the person using the machine. There's really no reason to change it.

So even though it says .DAT files will open with notepad they won't?

Any file can be opened in notepad.

All that means is that when you double click on the file notepad will try to open it. It will not effect SQL Server at all to have the assocation setup.

So will I never need to open .DAT's on a SQL server?

you usually read a .dat file with sql like bulk import. and this won't cause any problems.

You shouldn't ever need to open one manually on the SQL Server.
