Hi... I'm talking about BE v7.01 but this probably applies to v7.2 and 7.3 too.

For a long time I thought I was being smart by backing up the entire "Catalog" file
every week - in case of a disk crash.
My friend in an associated company has been doing the same thing and had a recent crash. He managed to retrieve his last "Catalog" folder - and set this in place as his current folder. Then he started Backup Exec.
The program immediately decides that the index file (named something like "BeTopCat.idx" needs to be rebuilt and it then sits there with an hourglass for several hours to do it. Then it produces your catalog - but many of the tape names will be gone from within the brackets in the LHS window. He found these could not be retrieved. So now he's busy re-cataloging about 90 tapes.
If it happened to me there'd be hundreds of tapes to re-catalog.

So I looked into my "Catalog" folder backups and found the important Index file was
never backed up because Backup Exec can't do that when it' using it.
So, I tried a simple drag-copy of the entire folder to another disk.
No go.
The Index still won't copy because Backup Execs "Services" have got hold of it.
If you go into the Control Panel - Services and turn off the 8 Backup Exec Services then it is possible to copy the file "BeTopCat.idx". But as soon as you turn off the services, another file called "BeTopCat.ldb" disappears so I'm now uncertain as to whether this needs to be copied before turning off the services.
Anyway, I'm still doing tests until I can easily backup and retrieve the catalog.
If anyone knows the right way to do it please let me know.
