how do I backup an oracle database server?

Can anyone tell me on how I would go about backing up an Oracle database server? We are currently running AS2000 w/sp4 on an NT4.0 box. The database server that we are attempting to backup is a remote server.

Currently we are shutting down the database before we do the backup. Is there another way?

Install the Oracle agent on the remote oracle server then you will be able to do a online backup and also apply SP4 for the agent...
