I'm running XP Pro SP1, (will not update to SP2, as it's a resource hog), anyway, I have multiple limited user accounts, (some with passwords set by the user) on the computer and one account (mine) that has full administrator access, I have only allowed administrator groups to shutdown/restart the computer, but, if I need to restart the computer, maybe after a driver update or a change to the system, when I try to shutdown/restart, windows displays "There are users still logged on to this computer, shutting down or restarting, may result in lose of data", one or more accounts may have something running, ready for completion later, is there a way that I can log off those users even if those accounts are passworded, without a loss of data on those accounts?

The only way that you can do this and be sure that there is no data loss would be to log into the accounts that are currently active and close any open software.

You can find out which users are currently active from the users tab of the Task Manager. You can also log them off from this dialog if you wanted to.

Unfortunately, I don't know the user(s) passwords for their accounts.

By using the task manager to log off a user, and with any programs running on that users account, would I get a 'Save Yes, No, Cancel' dialog allowing me to save any information befor logging off that user?.

Unfortunatly no you would not. The best you can do is inform your users that they need to save their documents before going back to the welcome screen.

It works, I can use the task manager to log users off, and
I've put a sticky note on the monitor casing to remind users:-

"If this computer needs to be shutdown or restarted for any reason, always! save any information that is being worked on and close the program(s) before switching to the logon screen, failing to do so, may result in loss of your hard work"

It seems to be working so far, I only had to restart once, after an antivirus update, and as far as I know, 3 out of the 7 user accounts that were active, saved their information (at least they better have).
