Hello everyone!

I have a problem setting up my wireless network at home.

Setup

Desktop runs XP SP1, wired to a Belkin wireless router. I ran the network wizard to setup the network. Internet is accessible thru here. Cannot see laptop.

Laptop runs XP SP1, installed a D-link wireless card adaptor, signal strenth is good and I can see the my wireless connection (status=connected). I also ran the wizard here using same workgroup name. Cannot see desktop, either.

My internet connection is thru DSL (PPPoE), I believe this is also a dynamic IP.

Note: I tried to setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), but I do not see that option under "Network Connections", in fact I see two connections, only one of them allows me to setup ICS, but I get no access to the net when I do.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What I did to connect all my PCs on my wire less network was this:

1. Run network setup wizard on PC #1, using the option toward the end to create a setup disk to use with other computers. I used a floppy for this.

2. Insert the setup disk on the laptop and run the setup.exe off the setup disk.

3. This will run the network setup wizard on the laptop, if it is XP or Win2K. Win98 may do it differently, but I can only speak to that from having read this in a home networking book.

4. Make sure you use the same name for your network on both the desktop and laptop setup wizards.

Another BIG point - in the setup wizard on both units, don't indicate connection sharing, but choose the option "this computer connects through the internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway".

Hope this helps! 8^)

Did you set up the SSID on laptop so that it matches the SSID on the router ? You don't need connection sharing to use wireless .

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses.

The SSID's are matched between the laptop and the router, which is setup for PPPoE.
I'll have to try the network wizard using the floppy just to give it a try. I had ran the wizard on both machines but because I do not have a floppy on the Desktop, I did not create a 'network setup disk', thinking all I had to do was specify the same workgroup name and I also made sure I selected:
"this computer connects through the internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway".

I also removed Norton Utilities firewall as well as the WIN XP firewall...feel pretty wide open right now, because I am going to try and disable WAP/WEP just to make sure they are not the guilty culprits....

Once again I appreciate your time

Hi guys,

I actually managed to get a bit further on the matter late last night. I noticed that the computers at work only had about 3-4 services running unter the network connection properties, so I disabled the ones at home to try to match those from work....then I ran the winsockfix utility mentioned somewhere in these forum and I actually managed to surf for a bit, but somehow I lost access to the internet after a bit.
I forgot, I also checked the DNS server for my DSL provider and added those to the wireless connection on the laptop.
I'll have to check this out later on during the week to see what happened.

wow...

all this time and effort and i think my mistake was in the encription key!!! go figure! [peace]

So you can't see the desktop from the laptop and vice versa?
First of all, upgrade to SP2. this will give you more options. If answer to the first question is yes, then make sure Wireless router is not blocking the trafic between wireless clients which they often do. Look around the configuration on the router and if you can't find it, call the support to help you out. Also, make sure both computers can connect to the internet at the same time. you can run some simple commands to figure out the IP addressses on the computers. search on google on how to use IPCONFIG command and figure out if you are getting correct IP address.
