Hi,

I have a printer server in NT4.0 domain. I want to add a network printer from a different floor and also allow everybody using it. How do I do this? Should I hoot up the printer from different floor and then load the driver on the printer server?

Any suggestion would really appreciated.

Make sure the printer is assigned a static IP address on the network and a subnet mask. It has to matches the same type of network your on. For example, if your internal network sceme is 10.11.0.12 make sure the printer that you want to be networked is also on that same network pattern like 10.11.0.13, or else it won't work. Once you have that configured on the printer make sure all cables are connected and plugged into the available network jacks on your network. Then once you know the IP address of the printer, and you've confirmed that it is the IP address that you assigned it, then its time to go on the print server and set up that printer. If your using Windows NT go to printers and add printer and choose my computer and hit next. Choose a port & a IP address for the printer and you choose an available port from what you see on the right of that screen and use the IP address that you assigned that printer. Click add port & choose LPR port & hit new port. Where it says name or address of server providing lpd put the servers static IP address. Type in the name of the printer where it says name of printer or print queue. Choose ok then close the printer ports dialog box, you should be back at the add printer wizard with the available port checked click next. Choose the manufacturer of the printer & the printer model & select where you have the drivers for that printer. once thats done name the printer which will be seen by the user using that printer on the print server. Make sure since you want to have everyone be able to use this printer that you select shared instead of not shared. Once thats done run a test print to test connectivity and you should be good to go. These instructions are kind of long but if you follow along with this while your setting this up you should have no problem. Also when your done test that it works by setting up the printer on someone elses computer and print a test print. That way you know it works. I hope this helps.
