How do i add 3d bevel and extrude to a 2d logo

I am fluent with photoshop and have used it for years, but i have discovered that illustrator has an excellent 3d feature.

I have tried to make a 2d logo i made in photoshop into 3d but the 3d effect adds the extrude and perspective effect to a rectangle around my logo, not around the logo itself, the logo has a transparent background but illustrator still add the effect to the area around my logo -

How can i fix this please ?

By the way im using Illustrator cs4 on PC

...the puls8 text has to be vector not bitmap...
