It's actually done through the TFTP server that your IP phones use when they boot. The TFTP addresses is either hard-coded if you use static addressing or part of your DHCP script if you use dynamic addressing. The latest file from Avaya just came out this month and is located at:
The phones will retrieve the firmware from a TFTP or HTTP server
download the firmwware and load in onto the fileserver, you'll need a 46xx settings file which is downloaded seperately.
If the DHCP scope is configured correctly the phones should pickup the fileserver and download the firmware automatically (they will need to be rebooted first)
It is possible to use the 87 as a http server and download the firmware onto that but I would avoid this on larger sites with a lot of endpoints
