I am not talking about crawling under desks with dirty floors or underneath houses to run a cable or similar as that is dirt and spider webs and more or less natural and like crawling in the woods.
I am talking about disgusting things that are in the category of public phones

Just had a receiver that needs to be shown as it cannot be described.

This is from an office worker not in a construction trailer.

I wonder what that guys living room looks like.

Took the picture when back in the shop then tossed it in the garbage and scrubbed my hands.

Gross. I always look before putting something like that against my face.
I used to carry windex and paper towel when I was a field tech and had to use public pay phones.
Sometimes you pulled the truck up to a pay phone and had to sit on hold for 15-20 minutes waiting for the dispatcher.

I repaired pay phones at one time and since then I don't put receivers to my ear any more. I don't even use other people's cell phone and rather use their speaker phones.

Not Avaya but yep - how could a phone in an office get like this?

I also discovered someone's collection of nail clippings at their desk once and since then nothing has really surprised me.

Dang, nail clippings
That must be some sort of sickness or so paranoid that someone will frame them for a crime with nail clippings.

I've had my fair share of disgusting moments,

- Was running cable through their ceiling and had a dead rat drop on me and land on the customer's desk. It was dead a long time ago. They were nonchalant about it. I'm standing there thinking... they didn't smell this dead rat all this time?

- Working in a church and the phone system was in the basement... next to the sewage system in a small enclosed space. I had to ask my manager to approve the purchase of a gas mask. It was really really bad. Felt sick for a week after that.

- Phone system was located underneath the kitchen of a restaurant and this area was covered in cooking oil dripping down from above. Old spider webs were strengthened by the oil. My co-worker at the time grabbed onto the trap door while going down there and his hand was caked with old used cooking oil lol.

My worst experience is doing an emergency call at an abortion clinic, they usually schedule service work on non-operating days, but today their VM/AA crashed and it was an emergency.
I was in the phone room just a few feet away from a procedure room and it's door was open and I could hear everything...
Oh and right in front of the wall mounted phone system is a small deep freeze. No way I'm lifting the lid to see what's inside...

One of the best experiences I've had is a service call at a strip club, the phone room is between the stage and dressing rooms, the girls would stop by for a chat after their show wearing nothing but a smile...

Keyboards like in laptops and any other buttons items get that way. For phones I use Lysol Spray (Be careful it can melt some plastics)or the best is Clorex wipes. Rubbing Alcohol is good.
But, for something that gross. You need something to soak that. Purchasing phones on e-bay or finding one at thrift stores vary. The last phone aka the 9641g looked and seems like brand new.

I remember when companies has someone come around to sanitize the phones.

To quote from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy:

"The Golgafrinchan Ark Fleet Ship B was a way of removing the basically useless citizens from the planet of Golgafrincham. The ship was filled with all the middlemen of Golgafrincham, such as the telephone sanitisers... A notation in the Guide about Golgafrincham after the departure of the B Ark states that the entire remaining population subsequently died from a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone."

Yes, a dirty handset may be hosting the cure for cancer, or the next black death.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

OMG that is the greatest quote ever.

I would put that on a t-shirt but I would have to stop all the time and wait for people to finish reading.

I think my favorite one was a Partner phone hanging on a wall had quit working. When I started to take it off the wall cock roaches started pouring out of the base. The technical term for why it didn't work... A few bugs in the system... I guess they liked the nice warm phone.
