Help, I'm going around in circles, I've been given differing advice. I would like to connect a sonicwall firewall to adsl line. Do I need a router\switch\"bridge-modem", I would also like to have multiple vpn connections.
Does anyone have a similar setup and can recommend a suitable device (ie no know firmware issues, allows more than 1 vpn connection). I have 5 static ips avail. Thanks for your help.

I would get a router that allows for a NON-NAT setup.

Then do the setup as following:

inet > router > firewall > switch > node

router would be you 1st line of defence then your firewall.

dogsbod,

No idea what model SonicWall you've got but they generally ARE routers as well as firewalls. You'd have

internet --> SonicWall --> Switch --? node.

Some SonicWalls can be VPN endpoints which means IT does the work of maintaining the tunnel. Most will also allow VPN passthru. In this case you'd need VPN client software on the nodes.

Hope that helps.

Do Sonicwalls have an ADSL port? Wouldn't they generally be dual ethernet, therefore requiring a DSL router for the internet connection and then an ethernet presentation to the firewall.

Chris.

I purchased a 'cheap' adsl router form the documentation had instructions on how to put the router into unumbered ip mode which was needed in my case as I have a block of 6 public IPs, this mode '...allows the PPP interface to be created with an IP address that is the same as that assigned to the modems ethernet interface.'
Thanks for the help

Chris,

No, the SonicWalls do not have an ADSL interface as far as I know. No information was given on the ADSL circuit and modem. Most ADSL modems are telco in and ethernet out. The ethernet out goes into the SonicWall in and the SonicWall out goes to a switch/hub or computer.
