How can you open HTML doc w/ excel using PHP? 1

Currently producing excel document using class MySQL2Excel. Class is easy to use but I cannot do formatting and some users are asking for it.

I know excel opens html documents pretty nicely but:
How can you open HTML doc w/ excel using PHP?

I mean, excel is a client side application ... Even if I have excel on my web server, I'll like to know how is this done.
