Hi everyone!

We have a Baystack 450 main unit that is part of a stack with 4 other baystack switches, we need to replace the management unit because it has some bad ports.

What the best way to swap out the unit and not lose the settings we need for VLAN, port mirroring etc..??

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Auger,

I'm kind of a newbie and still learing about managing Baystacks switches, could you give more details please?

Well if you console into your switch or telnet you can go to the "Configuration File..." menu choice and put in the tftp server info...

Create your own config img file name: "whatever.img"

and then go down to Copy config to server, change it to yes and hit enter.. that should transfer your img file to your tftp server.

Then on the new switch do the reverse and download the config file from the tftp server.

A tftp server is just a ftp server that can recieve and send files. you can find free tftp server software at:

There is more info in the manual for the Baystack 450 that you can find on: in their support area..
just look up documentation on that item

Are the 450's "stacked" with the cascadeunits & cables ?
If so,you can power off the management unit and the next unit in the cascade will assume management of the stack.
Ifthere is going to be a delay in replacing the unit, ensure to set the switch on the cascade unit for the "make up" unit to base.

I just read that the Software version have to be the same to use the Configuration file, has anyone ever done this with different Software versions??

Our management unit is V4.1.0.6 and our replacement is V4.2.X.X

What's the best way to swap a management unit?

Why not just upgrade the 450 you have now?

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I don't trust SW updates, if i update the sofware on the already dying Switch and it screws up it won't be good.
