How can we find first two characters of a flat file?

I have flat file e.g:

T18909 ij8kkjl23498 908234098 98234098
D1 89723498234098 9283j9
P3lks034982349

I to get only the first two character from every line into a variable.so, i can check if its T1, D1 or something else.

How we can do it?
