Hi,
Forgive me if my question is stupid. For my accpac 4.2A to work, i need to give my accpac users full control of the SharedData directory. Now how can i ensure that a user does not delete all files in that directory either intentionally or by error? The way i see it, a user can simply browse to that directory and delete anything. Please help.

Upgrade to Accpac 5.4 and Pervasive 9.5 then you do not have to give users rights to the data folder.
Otherwise live with the beast, in nearly 20 years of Accpac support I have never seen anyone delete the Accpac data intentionally or by accident.

Yes, Users dont need to visit sharedata, if u r using 4.2A, then ensure all clents to not access share data.

Sareeullah,

What you are saying make no sense at all. If users do not have access to the shared data folder then they will not be able to run Accpac at all. I guess that is one way of protecting the data, but then no work will get done.

The Full Control share of the SharedData folder cannot be avoided.(i.e : it has to be done)

However in order to mitigate the possibility of deletion of data in the shared folder you can try the following :

Go with a UNC pathname when performing workstation setup so that you do not have to map a the shared drive.

So when you run workstation setup the directed paths should read as :

Programs :\\(Your Server Name)\(Your Shared Folder)\ACCPAC
Data :\\(Your Server Name)\(Your Shared Folder)\ACCPAC
Tools :c:\CA_APPSW

Example :
Programs :\\accpacserver\accpac_share\ACCPAC
Data :\\accpacserver\accpac_share\ACCPAC
Tools :c:\CA_APPSW

You can try this on an existing workstation by un-installing the existing installation and then reinstalling using the above.

When the network drive is not mapped then there is a lesser possibility of a user investigating the contents of the shared folder and accidentally deleting something.

Hope it helps.
