how can i use an LOV to query records

I have a LOV on a 6i form. I want the user to be able to make a selection from the LOV and have the form execute a query based on the LOV contents. I dont have any trouble getting a LOV to work for data entry, but now I need to use it to let the user query. In other words, I need to place the for into query mode, use the LOV to fill in the field on the form and then execute the query.

can somebody point me in the right direction
