How can I tell what program made this file?

Hi,

I have been given a couple of files, they are supposed to be icon files of some sort. I have tried to open them with a bunch of different programs, but nothing opens them. I have tried to view them with a HEX editor, hoping to see what kind of files they are, but the only thing that I see is the first 2 characters (on the right side of the screen, the left side shows the HEX) are JG.

Any idea what created these files?

Bit of a guess here but are they files which have come from a MAC and compressed with Stuffit? Stuffit usually produce sit files but I think they can handle HEX might be worth looking at their web site, I'm sure a Google search will give the address.
