That is a real general question....What web server software are you running, most web server software has it's own logging ability? Does your web server sit behind a router that you own? If so do you have a public or private IP Address scheme and running acl's on the router? Routers are a very good source of information if you log to a syslog server. Netscape also offers a free service that has an abundance of information logged about visitors to your web page, it requires you to add some code to the first page of your site but will e-mail you reports every day with statistics. If you are looking to log to a file, I believe the best way is to use the logging ability of the web server software you are currently running. Microsoft IIS has some really good options in logging to a text file as well as logging to a database. I know Netscape also has some logging capability, unfortunately those are the only two I really know about (not really a web administrator).
