How can I save changes to modified workflow in SPdesigner

When I make any changes to a existing workflow in sharepoint designer I am unable to use a new version. I am trying to delete old versions via Workflow Setting menu of my list but new version is not being triggered. Is there some settings that I don't know about?
I just want to finetune my existing workflow and don't need a new versions every time I save it.
Please help.
