I'm trying to add another printer with the same printer device, but it just reinstalls on top of the first one.

I wonder if renaming the existing printer will let me install the second one with the default printer name.

Now, how do I rename a printer in windows xp pro?

Thanks in advance,

Aldi

To rename a printer.

To rename a printer, you must have the Manage Printers permission, which is one of several printer permissions.

Open Printers and Faxes.
Right-click the printer you want to rename.
Click Rename.
Type the new name.

Read the rest of the article in Help and Support.

linney there isn't rename option in the printer's pop menu in windows xp.

bcastner i visited the link and no help there.

The printer device is networked and installed on an nt 4.0 server box, when i make changes from the winxp workstation it applies those changes to the printer installed in the winnt 4.0 server which affects all users.

All i need is a second printer installed in the winxp ws using the same printer device. The purpose is to set the default printer to print one copy and the second printer to print 3 copies.

Any idea how to install a second printer for the same device?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Aldi

Perhaps I misunderstood the question. The instructions I linked above show how to define one device in multiple ways to support multiple sets of printer options.

It appears as though you want to add a second physical printer to a workstation, that is the same model as an existing network printer.

Just use the add printer wizard selecting 'local printer' instead of network as the printer type.

bcastner thank you for responding!

I'm sorry, I think that I haven't explain things well.

No, I don't have another physical printer (i called it printer device)

I have only one networked physical printer and I'm not intending to add any other physical printer to the ws.
I need to see though two printers in my printers folder one to print one copy and the other to print 3 copies.

Any idea how to add the second printer in the printers folder? I tried, but after the wizard is done, it still shows only one printer.

Please let me know if you have any idea how to do it.

Thanks a lot,

Aldi

Setting up an additional installation of a network printer on Windows XP
Use one of the following sets of procedures to set up an additional installation of a network printer. The procedures vary depending on whether the Windows XP computer is configured to use the default Windows XP Start menu or the Standard Start menu.

Note: Each additional installation must first be set up at the print server connected to the printer. If that print server also uses Windows XP, the instructions for setting up an additional installation of a local printer can be used to set up the printer on that machine. Other Windows XP workstations can then add that additional installation using the following steps:

If the Windows XP workstation uses the default Windows XP Start menu:
Select Start | Printers and Faxes.
Click Add Printer in the "Printer Tasks" section.
A printer wizard will assist you with adding an additional printer. When asked whether you would like to add a local printer or a network printer, select to add a network printer. When asked if the new printer should be the default for Windows-based programs, select No.

If the Windows XP workstation has been configured to use a Standard Start menu:
Select Start | Settings | Printers.
Double-click Add Printer.
A printer wizard will assist you with adding an additional printer. When asked whether you would like to add a local printer or a network printer, select to add a network printer. When asked if the new printer should be the default for Windows-based programs, select No.

Very kind of you Bill.

I did that yesterday when you gave me the link, but didn't work. When the wizard finishes, I'm left we the printer that is already installed - It appears like if I didn't run the wizard. (in win98 this is so simple) I wonder if I have a different problem - I tried using the admin account and the user account and nothing - new printer doesn't show after the installation.

Any idea?

Thanks again,

Aldi

I worked!!!!

Thanks a lot for your time Bill
