I want to make a montage using the following steps.

I plan to use one of the custom shape tools such as a flower. I want to completely fill the space with numerous mini pictures. I know that it is possible but I haven't been able to figure it out.

In the past, I have just erased the edges of the picture that extend beyond the custom shape color. Once all of my pictures are in place, I merge all layers and apply blending options. I know that there is an easier way to do this. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

This may be what you want to do.

Create a layer with your desired shapes.

Pick the paintbrush and try to apply it. PS will ask if you want to rasterize the layer. Click OK.

The shape mask will be converted to a shape on that layer. Turn off all the other layers.

Select the shape using the magic wand or a selection tool. Invert the selection and save it.

Fill the layer with a desired color.

Reload the saved selection, and add a mask. The mask will mask out your shape for that layer.

Insert the photos on a layer or layers below the shape layer. You will not need to erase the edges. As they move across the shape's boundary they will disappear or reappear.

ok your both making it more trouble than necessary

1.create the shape (or rasterized type) you want on a layer by itself,

2.place the photo on it own layer above the shape then place your mouse on the seam between the layers in the layers paletteand hold down the alt key (option on a mac) whenyou see two interlinking rings and an arrow click, the bottom layer with your shape has instantly become a mask in two steps

plus you can even reposition the picture while they are linked until it looks how you want it.

Thank you Rally PC!

Your advice is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I knew there was an easier way to accomplish my task; I just had to find the answer.
