I finally installed the GW 6. I tried to install the GW6SP3. But it looks extremely like GW6 which confused me a lot.
When I done all installation, I tried to connect the GW client to the server, the client software told me the version didn't match!!!
I check the system console on the server and I see the GW POA is 6.0.3. Is it the version with the SP3? How can I check the client version?
How can I match them?
It's 5:16am. I feel a little tired, and I want to get sleep. It's a very interesting thing to use NOVELL, I feel I am playing a puzzle game. haha~~ :>

the easiest way to check the clients is

then login -

this will only work if you have edited the .poa or better yet enter the http pwd on the poa object

this works for mta as well - but it's 7180

the install is the same
my preferred way of patching and this is just my way

on my laptop i have a copy of current software distrib
patch the distribution copy on laptop
update snapins on console1 on laptop 1.3.5 and 1.3.6
run the agent install against server hosting primary
run against all other servers that host domain and poa
run against all remaining poa's
reinstall gwia - its quicker
reinstall webaccess

when happy and checked client - copy to system software dist directory and then let it replicate to all others

Thing is getting pretty disorder.
1. I am still not sure whehter GW 6.0.3 is the GW6 with SP3? who can tell me?
2. I found there are one MTA and one POA in the system console list which there is POA only in the list last night.
3. Still get confusion on updating the GW with GWSP3. I really think the project manager who managed the programma of update should kill himself with a fozen TouFu(A soft Chinese food). What is this updating program? It is contained in the CD labled by GWSP3. However, when I start it, it doesn't labled itself that it's a updating program!! It just looks like a GW installation CD!! When I tried to update(May be I should call it reinstall) the GW, it told me that there were some db files missing and couldn't be found on the install media. When I try to click "Back" button, it pop up more installation windows!!!
I still don't know whether my GW has been patched or NOT!!!
4. When I try to run GW client from workstation, I got different error message each time.
1)First time:
The version can't access PO.
2)Second time: I typied the Admin and password.
The password entered is not correct.
3)Third time: I typied the same password again.
It comes up GW error. GW didn't not initialize successfully. OLD ERROR 80004005

Who can help me out? Otherwise, you can tell me the name of Novell manager so that I can send the Toufu to him.

To terry712:
Thank you for your advice.
1.I connect to the server:poa and MTA. It works fine. But I am still not sure what GW 6.0.3 means. Is that with SP3?
2. I still can't find out the version of client program on the workstaion. Can you tell me how can I do it?
3. I can't understand your instruction clearly.
It seems that I should update the distribution folder first then I should click "Install product" and choose install all of these components?
How many components have I installed when I update the GW system? Shall I install all of components in the "Install the products"?
4. Thank you for providing help during the holidays. :>

yes 6.0.3 is sp3

to check version of client - help will tell you or check it over the browser -
patching the system - lets break it down to it's components
when you patch - what are you doing
1. it's updating the management console
2. it's updtaing the nlm's and dc's etc in the sys:system (or where you have installed them)
3. it's copying all the software to an install directory - ie your SSD

so as i say when i upgrade my system -
step 1. update my console1 snapins - (now i always create a poa with 1.3.5 just now as 1.3.6 doesnt work with 6.5.2 - it's ok with 6) - run the install and select the admin part and only update console1

step 2 - on the location where i have copied new sp - i dont run the setup - i just run the server agent install against the primary domain . i cna check this as if you type m gwmta
at console it will be 6.0.3 or 6.5.3 or whatever you are patching

step 3 - do all other mta's and poa's
same method

step 4 - the gwia - run from the interent dir - cant remeber excatlt but you know what i mean - flash it over top - take a note of settings in existing gwia so you can enter as required

step 4 stop webaccess and reinstall it then restart

step 5 - if you update SSD's with the software it will autoupdate - you need to mod a couple of ini's for setup

the groupwise pwd is always blank by default. it's easier to watch the process
create a new account - fsinatra
give him a groupwise account - look at the fid - verify it's created
then access his account fsinatra - no pwd
enable verbose logging on poa screen - you will see it connecting etc (put this back to norm when happy with what its doing)

The version can't access PO - this normally is a version thing - now i cant remeber the way around it is -
a old client can connect to a new postie but a newer client cannot connect to older - ie 5
is this a new postoffice - a postie's db on creation is strangely enough a 5 db until a client connects and it converts to 6.x
check your postie

If you see a GW version number anywhere (MTA, GWIA, Gateway, etc.) like 6.0.3 then you are @ SP3. The last number in the version number denotes the SP. We are running Netware 6.5SP2 and GW 6.5.1. I can get the GW Client version by going to the properties screen for the file Grpwise.exe. Usually located in c:\Novell\GroupWise.

You should be able to run an earlier version of a GW Client against a later PO. Like running a GW v5.x.x Client against a GW v6.x.x system. One thing that I can think of to check is the "Minimum Clent Release Version" setting. This is located by going into ConsoleOne and looking at your GW PO(s) under Properties\Clent Access Settings. If I run across a more definitive answer I will post back. Good Luck!

Ok. Thank you for both guys. STill no luck.
I check the version again and restinall the GW 6 and GWClient 6 as well.
I check the properties of gwwise.exe, it's version 6.0.
I check the POA and MTA by multipul ways. All of them indicates there are version 6.0.
However, I still can't get the client access to the server.
It still says the the version of GWC can't access this post.
I wonder whether the groupwise will be seen in the system console list. Because I only see MTA and POA in the list.
When I try to connect the POA from client, the message in POA log shows the connect.
Everything looks fine, but it can't be connected.

ok go back to basics.

at server type m gwpoa and then rtn
you will get a version number - what is it
do the same for gwmta
are the agents communicating with each other
check the status in the domain screen and postoffice screen
mta screen should show 1 domain open and 1 postoffice - assuming this is what you have
post screen - something like f10 and then message transfer status or something like that
does the user have a fid
on the postoffice screen - there should be a db version - ehat is it

can any clients attach ?

I just restore the client(WINXP) from the old date when I didn't install anything related to GW.
I believe everything on the server should be version 6.0.
I installed GWC(version 6.0) on the client.
It's still the same thing.
First login, cann't access POA because the version.
Second login, cann't access POA because the version.
Third login, the first online option was grey and unavailable. Only remote and cache were available. After trying remote, I got OLD error.
I doubt there are something error on the server.
I restart the server again and again, I found something very interesting.
The POA and MTA are not just one.
In the first restart, I got 2 MTA(Same name) and 1 POA.
In the second restart, I got the 2 POA with the same name and no MTA. In the second POA, it showed "TCP/IP port in use(8555). Port specified:1677". When I enter this POA, it closed itself automatically.
In the third restart, I got 2 POA(same name), 2 MTA.
What's wrong with it?

When I tried to reinstall the server, I was confused at
1.Update GW system:
I indicates the primary domain folder to the folder which contains wpdomain.db.
2.Then, It let me to choose the folder for Agent folder. I selected the folder of PO folder.
3.It let me to find out the domain and postoffice name and folder. I select the same domain folder I choosed above and PO folder.
That's what I have done on reinstall GW6.0. Is that corret?

By the way:
Domain/PostOffice folder.

I checked the grpwise.ncf in the system folder. There are only two command lines for POA and MTA.

ok
go right back to basics - you need to stop the reinstall / reboot theories these compound the issues
the client isnt seeing the postoffice thats why you are getting the errors
ok so you have groupwise on the server so lets work with that
exit all the agents so gwpoa nor the gwmta is running
lets have a look at your grpwise.ncf
there should basically be two lines
load gwmta @domain.mta
load gwpoa @postie.poa
or something like that
lauch these
make sure you have one mta and one poa - and verify they are talking - ie mta screen sees 1 postie and its open - postie check mta status

All right, man. I really want to kill the project manager.
I checked some posts via the Internet, they claimed I copy files from installation CD to the PO folder. I did, and it didn't work.
Therefore, I decide to build another CLEAN server with NW6sp3 and GW6.0 only. I did. I tried to connect the client to server, same problem of version.
I was a little angry about it. I doubt there was a problem in the client. I build another computer for a client(WINXPSP1) and install the NWC and GWC6.0. It's still the same problem!!!
I was pretty angry about this problem. Thanks god, I am using vmware now otherwise, I don't know how many computers will be reinstalled in this stage. I think there must be some problems on installing GW server.
There is a little doubt when I install the GW server, it said I need to tell it where the agent installation folder is. I put the path of PO folder to it. Is it right?
I am going to be crazy ...................
The next thing I need is to buy a Toufu and get the address of that manager......

Thank you , buddies. I made it.
Finally, I made it.
I reinstll the agents again into the system folder.
That's what I need to do.
Then, after that, I got error message that the length of name of MTA folder is too long, and I changed it. I works fine.
Well, after having this trouble, I begin to understand the difference between MSFT and Novell.
In MSFT server, you can't do anything but following the GUI.
In Novell server, you didn't do anything but COPY files to the right place and changed the script or config file writen in text.
Novell gives u more free space and easy to be repaired as long as you know how to do it.
Now, I am moving on to the Internet Agent and Webaccess part. New troubles will come....
Sometimes, I feel I am playing an AD&D PC game. I am a necromancer trying to figure the right formula and Bang! Fire ball!
Thank you everyone, especially for terry. :>

Terry,
You have the patience of a rock. I would give you a star if I could. Good going!!

I'm not proud, I'll give him a star for trying.

200063,
When you ask for advice here, follow it. Terry, Marvin, FarOut, ITsmyfault and others are really VERY good at this stuff (me, I'm just a punk). I bet Terry could have solved your problem 2 days faster for you...

glad to here you fixed - the gwia is a bit more difficult but just follow the prompts

and webaccess - this is the easy one - just make sure you do it on apache though

it's just run setup and keep agreeing - create a webacc user as you need to allocate rights to the domain
