how can i make my animated footage go on my background?

please help! i am new to after effects also, only started learning a week ago.
i'm working with aftereffect 6.5 on my mac.

i used a rostrum to animate a hand-drawn dog. it was done on a4 white paper.
i also used a rostrum to do a simple background on a4 paper. my purpose was to make it all wiggly & hand-drawn.

is it possible in after effects to layer these two?

i exported the dog animation into quicktime & i need to know how i can make it so that the quicktime movie of the dog can be seen over the background i have prepared.

is there anyway that i can get just the animted dog layered on top of the background without the rest of the white paper being seen?

You could try to use the transfer mode (like blending modes in Photoshop (Ps)): set to Multiply
