The link in the posting above appears to be broken, at least when I tried it, but you can accomplish your goal using srvany.exe which comes with the NT (or 2000) resource kit(s). There's a related file on the resource kit, srvany.wri, that documents the procedure. This allows you to take any *.exe file and make it into a service. Very useful.
You can also search on the MSDN site for "NTSVC.OCX", which is an OCX you drop on a form (usually made invisible) that allows your app to run as a service. It was originally written by Microsoft several years ago, but is unsupported. My experience has been that it's good for about 3 days, and then you have to restart your service.
