Hi there,

I've just finished migrating data to a new application server (Server2). Everything is working fine apart from the published MSI's that are still looking for files on the old UNC path (\\Server1\...). There is no way of changing this path without all MSI's uninstalling themselves across the domain.

I thought by pointing a DNS Host record for the old server at the new server would solve this problem but it doesn't.

So the question is how can I get the server to respond to a UNC path of both \\Server1\... and \\Server2\...

FYI: Server2 is no longer on the network.

I've tried DFS but that doesn't work. It returns an error saying that a duplicate name exists on the network????

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Connecting to SMB share on a Windows 2000-based computer or a Windows Server 2003-based computer may not work with an alias name

Oh yeah, if you do the above for goodness sake document it. I've seen people hunt for servers that are not physically present when this method has been used, it can cause some confusion. :->

You also might want to look into DFS. Not only does it resolve this problem, but it helps distribute the load among various servers.
