how can I get the netmask of my machine

I want the netmask : like 255.255.255.0 not 0xfff0

on which unix platform ? because on AIX you have lsattr -El en? ( shows netmask in decimal)
 
arenot there some tools to covert hex -> decimal address?
 
Take a look at the options related to the ipsc command.

It should give you what you need. For example -

ipsc -a {ip address}/27

The output is rather lengthy but as I said it should give you what you are looking for.

If FreeBSD sets it in any way like OpenBSD, try looking at the /etc/hostname.${INTERFACENAME} file, where "hostname" is literally "hostname", not resolved to a machine's name.
